Greener Pastures for Pentridge
ASPECT Studios begin work on open community areas
As the buildings and bluestone walls undergo restoration and repurposing, the internal grounds of Pentridge are set for a transformation of their own, thanks to the design brilliance of ASPECT Studios.
With almost 20 years experience under their belt, the team at ASPECT Studios is comprised of landscape architects, urban designers and living architects, designing cohesive public spaces that are beautiful, purpose driven and connect people with places. They specialise in designing memorable spaces where people can meet, gather and enjoy.
With an impressive portfolio of past projects including Junction Place in Wodonga and Victoria Park Oval, Pentridge presented the perfect combination of history, community and innovative potential for their next project. In fact, the challenge of using established heritage structures in the space and the potential to create ‘something fresh within something established’ was a predominant aspect of the project’s appeal.
Speaking with Senior Associate, Erwin Taal, he revealed the company’s excitement in being able to adapt the Pentridge site to satisfy a number of community groups and expectations. From the younger generations looking for a unique area with dynamic design elements, to families wanting a safe experience for their children and established Coburg locals who are connected to the historic elements of the site.
Mr Taal clarified that ASPECT Studios’ concept for Pentridge will take all these community expectations into account, not satisfying just one, but multiple invested parties. The site will feature a wide variety of offerings including, heritage interpretation hot spots, playful dry and wet landscapes, community and kitchen gardens, small serene spaces for solitude contrasted with open vibrant places for events.
‘The outcome will not be a place focused on satisfying the expectations of any one particular group, but instead a setting where the needs of each part of the community can be played out.’
ASPECT Studios’ three main objectives for the area’s design include:
- The adaptable public piazza offering varied food and beverage vendors as well as a clear area for entertainment and events spaces that can be utilised year-round.
- A range of small and large open spaces that will subtly incorporate moments of history and interpretation to tell the stories of Pentridge’s past.
- Open spaces for active and passive recreation, community facilities and kitchen gardens to provide a varied offering for visitors and locals to engage with the site.
These spaces will be designed with the framework for evolution, allowing the outdoor space to be refined and adapted over time to reflect the changing needs of those who use it.
‘Initially, many visitors may come out of curiosity, to see and experience a part of Melbourne’s history. Others will come due to its proximity. It will be their repeat visitation that establishes the success of the precinct.’
The overall goal of ASPECT Studios is to bring a sense of comfort, timelessness and richness of experience to all the open public spaces. Each area is designed so that people familiar with the history, or new to the area, can each learn the site’s stories in an organic and engaging experience, helping the history to live on for generations to come.
