Opera at Pentridge with TOSCA: Bound in Blues, Soul and R&B
BRINGING OPERA BACK TO THE PEOPLE
The rebirth of Pentridge as a focal site for culture and creativity continues with Emotionworks – Cut Opera’s forthcoming production of Tosca: Bound in Blues, Soul and R&B.
Originally set in Rome against the backdrop of Napoleon’s invasion of Italy, Tosca – Puccini’s spectacular tale of torture, murder and suicide – is one of the most popular operas of all time. Now Pentridge plays host to a bold new adaptation, which runs from April 22 to May 7. The imposing Gothic revival architecture of the Pentridge site is sure to form a compelling setting for this tale of escaped prisoners, and the fanatical love corrupt police chief Scarpia has for the beautiful diva Tosca.
Devised and directed by award-winning Opera Australia director Julie Edwardson, Tosca: Bound in Blues, Soul and R&B follows Cut Opera’s mission statement to return opera to the people. Classic operas are distilled to no more than 90 minutes in length, and are interpreted through the lens of modern performance and contemporary genres. Performers come from a range of backgrounds, from classically-trained to rock, rhythm and blues, and audiences get to experience these works with a renewed energy and accessibility.
EXPERIENCE ASTOUNDING MELBOURNE VOICES
The production features a host of Melbourne’s best operatic and contemporary voices – including Jason Wasley/Te Ua Houkamau as Cavaradossi, Michael Lampard/Peter Hanway as Scarpia, Justine Anderson/Katrina Waters as Tosca and popular blues performer Richard Woods as Angelotti – all backed by the singular sounds of the Cut Opera House Combo and the Sassy Soul Sirens.
And if that’s not enough to whet your appetite, the production also includes an optional guided tour of Pentridge’s heritage prison cells. If recent experience is anything to go by, any prison tour tickets will be in high demand so make sure to book early!
We’re excited to be providing companies such as Emotionworks – Cut Opera a unique new backdrop to perform against, and can’t wait to see how they and many others will use it. For bookings, visit https://www.trybooking.com/ORTI
