The first Pentridge community day kicks off with a burst of colour
We were overwhelmed to enjoy such strong community support at the first Pentridge community open day on Saturday 21 May. With over 4,000 guests entering the bluestone walls to explore the historic site, they were treated to stories of the past and an exciting glimpse into plans for the future of Pentridge.
Under the colourful installation by Bangin Hangins, guests were welcomed to explore and enjoy the open spaces within the Pentridge walls. The once dormant, heritage site was quickly transformed by local families into a vibrant community hub. Guests were treated to delicious local food trucks and entertained by musicians and family activities in the future planned community space.
Free guided tours were given to hundreds of visitors on the day, offering a rare and exciting glimpse into the stories that have been hidden within the prison walls since 1851. These tours also offered exclusive access into areas of the prison that have been restricted for decades.
The community day also marked the launch of a photographic exhibition in the building known as the Annex. The free exhibition, ‘Pentridge Unlocked’, will run for four weeks and is open on weekends between 12pm and 4pm.
Due to the overwhelming success of the free open day, Shayher Group will explore the opportunity for more community events in the future.
