What’s the plan for Pentridge?

Honouring the past while looking to the future

Pentridge is one of the inner north’s most recognisable landmarks. So much history lies in its heritage-protected bluestone buildings. But Pentridge is also full of potential. Our vision is to preserve that history while providing sustainable, environmentally sound housing, open spaces, and amenities for the Coburg community.


A vibrant hub for Coburg

The Pentridge of the future will serve as a vibrant and sustainable urban hub, a place for the shared use of residents and workers, the neighbouring community and tourists. It will incorporate housing, retail, dining, entertainment and public space offerings right in the heart of one of Melbourne’s most exciting inner northern locations.


A merger of heritage and contemporary

Pentridge’s historical elements are what make it unique. It’s imperative to us that these are retained, which is why we are working with Heritage specialists, including Sue Hodges Productions and Bryce Raworth, in conjunction with Heritage Victoria, to ensure a sympathetic restoration and appropriate activation of the site (we’ll touch on more details about our work with heritage experts in a later post). The heritage architecture of the former prison will be offset by the careful placement of contemporary buildings, ensuring the unique character of this landmark is preserved.


Considering the environment

In all aspects of the development of Pentridge, we’re encouraging best practice building design that seeks to reduce greenhouse emissions. In line with this, we are promoting sustainable use of natural resources and developing solutions for water and energy use.


Working with the community to build a vibrant hub for Coburg

To ensure Pentridge meets real needs, we are committed to working with the Coburg community. To that end, we will soon be establishing the Residents and Community Group (RCG) to ensure two-way communication. This group will include members of the community, and will provide us with regular feedback to inform the vision for the site and ensure we’re on the right track.
