Pentridge and the Piazza

24th November 2020At Pentridge

Pentridge prison has undergone a transformation. The new piazza adds almost 6,500m2 of public open space to Coburg and adjoins the brand new Pentridge Shopping Centre, including a full-line Ritchies IGA supermarket and the state-of-the-art Pentridge Cinema. The centre also adds local retail and dining which are complimented by Pentridge’s heritage buildings, creating a truly unique space for the local community and visitors alike.

The Pentridge Piazza encourages visitors to host picnics at Pentridge, whilst kids can run around freely on the Children’s Lawn, playground and water feature. Responsible consumption of alcohol within the Piazza is allowed, however, there is a strict no-smoking policy. Dogs are allowed as well, as long as they are on leash. Whether it be a visit to the shops, cinema, or a general outdoor picnic at Pentridge, the site’s intriguing past makes for an interesting experience.

If you’d prefer to dine at Pentridge, instead of organising your own picnic, there will be alfresco dining opportunities, to make the most of Melbourne’s summer whilst adhering to the COVID-19 safety rules. Dine with Cielo Gelateria, Jacky Jones, Pelicana Chicken, Mela Patisserie or Lucky Little Dumplings while you’re visiting!

Tours at Pentridge are scheduled to launch in 2022. Further information on what to expect from future Pentridge tours can be found here. B Division, as well as parts of A Division, are also in direct view of those lounging around the Pentridge Piazza.

In the future, to further establish the cultural and historical significance of this iconic local landmark, Pentridge will open up the Piazza as a supportive creative space for Coburg. It can grow to become a viable outdoor space for appropriate festivals, as a space for art or cultural activities, and other relevant activations.

After seven years, we welcome the community to the much-awaited opening of the heritage precinct. Located less than 10kms from Melbourne CBD, Pentridge is easily accessible via public transport. For those driving, underground parking is available. Parking for bikes is also available on site.
